Skip Crested in 2012, Skied my Butte off in 2015

Crested Butte, Colorado, was the #8th ski resort visited this year. MauiSkiBus did not visit this famous extreme mountain in 2012. Really did not have it on the tour for 2015. Reason? Support. Why visit? Scoldings from so many top notch skiers that MauiSkiBus had not been to the Butte. So back to the support.

The marketing department did not support MauiSkiBus in 2012 nor did they express an interest in the 2015 adventure. Crusty Butt, as MauiSkiBus has heard many call this ski destination, did not have any crust when MauiSkiBus entered the tropical ski bum butt in the main patrol hut. A wonderful welcome was given by the patrollers and the tropical playing cards were a big hit. One of the head patrollers, Frank, summers in Molokai, and invited MauiSkiBus to ski some runs with his rocket fast lady, Josephine. Miss Josephine invited MauiSkiBus to a Crested Butte City Chamber of Commerce party. Many of the members had seen MauiSkiBus in town and were a bit unhappy that the marketing department was not supportive.

A bit of another warm welcome in Crested Butte came from Creekside Spa, as Andi set MauiSkiBusFranklin up with some electric  for heat on a -15 below winter night. Warmth for MauiSkiBus comes in many different ways, from the Crested Butte lot attendant that pointed out to every guest the Hawaii plates on MauiSkiBus, skiing with ski patrollers, invitations to private parties, electric plug in on a frigid, to Crested Butte locals giving a thumbs up to MauiSkiBus.

Monarch Pass, high in the Gunnison Range

Ok, so this resort is not fancy. Not a huge vertical. Not a big name. Really not close to anything that is well known. All by itself, in a position to capture the easterly moving winter storms, to trap that white fluffy powder. MauiSkiBus spent two days here, observing the very clean lodge, well groomed trails, plenty of parking, and no lift lines. Please give my lungs a break. Why?

Moguls. Even though there were plenty of groomed fun runs, the mountain staff lets the skiers design moguls on their own. Open bowl moguls, tree studded slopes with moguls, and MauiSkiBus’s favorite, “Hollywood Alley”. Well the runs really were not named this, MauiSkiBus never stopped enough to remember the names of the runs under the chair, they are just called “Hollywood Alley” at all resorts. Any expert skier would burn their thighs on these runs and if you did not, the lack of a lift line, would not give much rest before you had to do it again. Thanks, Moguls of Monarch, MauiSkiBus did work some Maui thighs!

A very fun place to ski, varied terrain, and plenty of different runs for all abilities. Hike to the peak overlooking Milkwoods for double blacks, cruise to the skiers right ridge and see no one, or get on it for the cat skiing offered here. So a ski resort named Monarch does have a very well rounded feel. Still love those moguls. Try them, you might get a feel of a movie starr from Hollywood.

Shree Yoga Taos, Genevieve

Action, Reaction. Reaching out, returning back. Saying and then doing. This creates coercion and a forward progress. MauiSkiBus does and will continue to excel and following through with what is said, and so does Genevieve of Shree Yoga Taos, New Mexico. With smart phones, a text, a message, or an e-mail can be sent. There is no reason not to return messages, especially if you are operating a business.

Miss Genevieve of Shree Yoga Taos was on it. No delay, receives an A+ for response. MauiSkiBus really respects this and wishes to send a Maui thank-you to Shree Yoga.

Taos needs, well not steeps!!!

Snow. White, fluffy, falling from up there, above, where the Snow Gods hold back at times. ALL SKI RESORTS need snow, Mother Nature snow is best, manmade can do in a pinch. Taos Ski Valley is in the southern reaches of the snow storms and MauiSkiBus has not been able to ski Taos as Taos is meant to be skied due to a lack of the white fluffs of frozen water moisture. With a unseen mountain from the base offering nearly 50% expert drops, this is an expert skiers mountain when the fluff is deep enough.

Of all ski resorts visited by MauiSkiBus, Taos seems to have most eccentric crowd. It seems that no matter where you turn, a unique character emerges, seems that th e 60′s are still alive. These Taosites can ski though. Ski with the best of the best, as Taos Mt. makes one a great skier. Beginners do not stay beginners here very long, say a day or two, because Taos limits non-ability skiers from really venturing out of the green zone. The Black zone is where it is at Taos. Now the white needs to cover all that black on the steeps of Taos, New Mexico.

Silverton, Colorado, not for the wanna bees.

So you wanna say that you skied this or that at your favorite resort? Silverton will not invite you. Have an attitude that you ski great? Silverton does not want you? Missing manners on a ski resort? Do not come to Silverton!!!! This location high in the San Juan Mountains of south west Colorado, say 12,000 feet, okay add some more, maybe a thousand feet or so, will only want the best of the best skiers/snowboarders with the best of the best attitudes.

At this ski, well not really a resort, as the lodge is a tent, the gear stash is a former school bus, and the lift, well there is only one. An ex-con will fit here, as the shuttle bus states “Correctional Facility”, and the drivers DO NOT RESPECT anyone that is in the way. Honk, Honk! Right on Silverton, keep your destination this way, keep your ski not resort this way, keep the ultimate BAD ASS terrain NON GROOMED, and keep the right to kick out BOZOS!!!

Avalanches. Death first, soiled undies second, and third, all to be on call. ALL skiers/snowboarders at Silverton MUST carry beacons, shovels, and probes first, as the lifties will check to see that you have it, and then look at your lift ticket second. Slides here are a nearly daily thing, so a serious attitude MUST be taken. After that, lines upon lines of the most breathtaking scenes, really not real, will tease your vision. Did some one slip you purple haze? Shrooms? Are you really here? Silverton seems to be past a real experience when skiing here. Need more of this ski feel here, as an addiction will be engraved into your skiing soul. This is the only real drug needed, no burning necessary, as lungs and thighs will get the burn from the inside out on Silverton’s lines of white steep chutes.

Silverton. Real. Not for the talker, only for the real serious.

#6 An 8 Month Instructor at Trinity Yoga

Type A, AA, AAA, personalities are movers, doers, and very forward thinking, kinda “get out of my way people”. Why should they take a yoga class? Time to turn it off. Yes, turn off that type A+ persona, and just remove all to get to simple. An always right thought pattern will not fit into any yoga class anywhere. Especially when there is an 8 month instructor smiling in front of you, in a yoga class, in the heart of Frisco, Colorado.

Stacey of Trinity Yoga, right on 5th and Main, in the heart of Frisco, treated MauiSkiBus to a delightful class, that started with a bit a breath mimicking the waves rolling on the beaches of Maui. Ha, an important way to breath out, Alo-Ha, I give you my breath in Hawaiian. An added treat, was Sacey’s 8 month old daughter, so peacefully behaving, enjoying all of our poses, while she did her own, with a delightful smile on her bright face.

This studio offers a multitude of classes, pilates, personal classes, and has a feel of being at home once entering. So a busy person, with a busy life, a busy mind, busy attitude, can enjoy the feel of this studio and even enjoy the feel of being at home. Maybe one might regress, step back a bit, open up the inner child, and become more youthful. Trinity Wellness Yoga studio has a new instructor in training, now only 8 months, someday to share her Ha, her breath of youth.

#5 Samadhi Yoga Class Worth a Grand

Samadhi, a state of mind peace, should be carried by all, at all times, especially in our fast paced modern world. Loose it a bit, a reminder can be had easily in quiet room, in the wilderness, or even with earplugs. Doing a yoga class in a room that has distractions, noises, and more, a mind not at peace will receive benefits worth a grand.

Andrea Frye, Samadhi Yoga, Breckenridge, Colorado, has that mind peace to share. With a bit of color in her hair, soothing eyes that heal, teaches a multitude of classes in the ski town area of Breckenridge, Colorado. The class that MauiSkiBus attended was at the Grand Timber Lodge, a fantastic ski resort in a fantastic ski town, harboring a front desk staff that awarded MauiSkiBus with VIP parking. Miss Andrea was prompt in her response to MauiSkiBus and gave directions better than a Google GPS Girl!

Tourists on vacation from all over the USA, many coming from very low elevations, seemed to excel at the 9,000 foot plus elevation, as Andrea composed a class that fit this all female crowd to the tee. Distractions from a nearby indoor pool and Jacuzzi did not impact the attendees, and comments of gasping for air of thank-you, were sent peacefully her way. A state of mind peace was attained, in a simple yoga area, in a Grand Lodge, at 9,000 plus feet, in a ski town far away. Samadhi can happen anywhere and can be carried forth throughout one’s day.

#4 Pinch Me at the Peak Yoga

Views. Pleasant on the eye. Can we have a table with a view? “Look at that view”, exclaimed the real estate agent. “We would demand only an ocean view”, MauiSkiBus has heard numerous times. Why should more men take a yoga class? Yes, the view. At Peak Yoga, in Dillon, Colorado, the view is so fantastic, a pinch would be needed to see if it was real. Really, 13,000 foot snow capped mountains, right there, right out the window, right behind a funny and fit instructor, Miss Lauren.

A brand new studio, down the hall from a salon, massage rooms, office rooms, offers views out their studio window worth just the easy price of the class. Oh, did you hear that beginners have a free class? Lovely Pena, the proud owner of Peak Yoga, really enjoyed having MauiSkiBus add to the view, as easy parking was had here for the oversized yellow fun bus from Maui.

After a day skiing A-Basin or Keystone, a quick drop in for Peak’s post ski class, will freshen legs to hit the slopes the next day. At that time, a sunset behind the view of the Summit peaks will add to the view within Peak Yoga. Yes, men should step on the yoga bandwagon more, and Peak Yoga will offer phenominal views of peaks, sunsets, and maybe a brightly painted yellow ski bus from Maui. Yes, there is something to be said about a view.

Say Arapahoe Basin Colorado 2015

MauiSkiBus likes to share what life is like sleeping at high elevation, say above 10,000 feet, in the winter, say -10 degrees, during a blizzard, say 50 miles per hour wind gust. Any takers? Say a 15 year old? Say a teenage texting girl? Say one that lives at sea level? Where the winter night average temperature is  50 degrees? My cousin’ daughter, from California, Maddie Bankosh was the taker.

Arapahoe Basin is a short drive from either Breckenridge, Frisco, or Silverthorne/Dillon, Colorado up Route 6, towards Loveland Pass. Once there and winter camping at 10,000 feet plus, -10 below, with 50 mph winds, it feels like a long way away from the warmth of a condo or any modern living. Cold temperatures are the enemy of diesel engines and Maddie had the 3am chore of starting MauiSkiBus, to keep the engine warm.

A-Basin for short, offers views of the continental divide, the spine of the Rocky Mts., where snow melting into water on one side, flows west, and the other side, flows east. Peaks here, too numerous to mention one more beautiful than another, surround this ski resort, with views to gasp at. Fear not beginners, as A-Basin has a plethora of beginner runs, criss-crossing between the extreme expert runs that so many locals love to rage about.

An experience can be found here at A-Basin, a resort without the parking distance of many bigger areas. To be able to have easy access to ones vehicle, even a yellow tropical bus from Maui, is a huge asset that A-Basin easily offers. Front row, prime view, the spot, yes Maddie experienced MauiSkiBus on a blustery night at a ski resort that feels so far away, however so close to the heart of Summit County, Colorado. Thank-you A-Basin, Colorado!

#3 A Frisco Yoga Goddess that is not SHY 2015

An instructor in any field should not be SHY, and MauiSkiBus found a yoga goddess in the heart of Frisco, Colorado, with two feet of fresh snow barricading the entry to her yoga palace. SHY, Summit Hot Yoga, owner Deby Curcio, set MauiSkiBus up with a yoga sculpture class that was felt two days later. When you think that you are fit, take this class, and parts of your body will speak to you days later.

My skiing the next day at A-Basin, enjoying that two feet of powder, was enhanced by the S.H.Y., Summitt Hot Yoga, the day before. Skiers desire to ski better, however more time on the mountain is really not as good as a class in hot yoga. Once your muscles are warmed up, stretching can be enhanced, balance can increase, and strength from the core will for sure be added. Snowboarders almost need yoga more, as their position is a-symmetrical, using one side of the body more than the other.

However tough or fit you may be, visit SHY, smiling Deby, and enjoy her class.
